Dorothy Jean (Anderson) BarnumApril 7, 1928 ~ February 12, 2017 (age 88)
Mrs. Dorothy Jean Barnum, 88, of Lake Odessa, MI passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. She was born April 7th, 1928 in Lansing, MI, the daughter of Harold and Katherine Anderson.
Dorothy resided in Lansing until 1940 when her parents moved to Woodbury where her father opened the Anderson’s General Store. Dorothy spent many hours working for her father in this store. She graduated from the Woodland High School in June of 1946. She then attended the Lansing Acme Business College where she obtained her general business degree. She went to work as a secretary in the accounting department for E.W. Bliss until the birth of her and Johns’ first child, Thomas. She did not return to working outside the home until after her last child entered school. She worked for Lake Odessa High School helping to develop the office procedures at the new high school. The process was very exciting and rewarding for her to be involved in helping to develop the Lake Odessa School Systems’ new office system. John and Dorothy eventually moved to Hastings where she was then hired by the Hastings School Systems’ to help open the office in the new high school. She retired from Hastings Schools.
Dorothy met the love of her life, John R. Barnum, during high school where they became lifelong sweethearts. They were married October 24th, 1947 at 7:30 p.m. in her parents’ Woodbury home. Their first home purchase was in Woodbury. After the birth of their second child, Karon, they all moved to a farm on Velte Road. Four years later their last child, Daryl, was born. Many memories were made on this farm as Dorothy and John raised their family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Karon, her parents, her sister Joyce, and her brother Ralph.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Thomas and his wife Wendy J., Daryl and his wife Wendy S., son-in-law Scott Bolton and his wife Carol. She was blessed and extremely proud of her grandchildren Renee, Samantha, Jared, Matthew, Morgan, and Erica; and her nine great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at the Central United Methodist Church on February 15, 2017 from 11am until Noon when friends and family will share a meal together. Donations are suggested to Hospice of Lansing and Stoneleigh Residence, 3411 Stoneleigh Dr. Lansing MI, 48910. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.koopsfc.com
