Genevieve Dobija, 100, of Lake Odessa, passed away on October 6, 2019 at the Thornapple Manor Nursing Home in Hastings, MI. Genevieve lived a wonderful long-life providing love and care to her family and good humor and consideration to all she knew. Genevieve was born on February 24, 1919 to Michalina (Pieczkowzki) and George Taraszkiewicz in Detroit and was raised in Wyandotte, MI on a small farm where she and her siblings enjoyed caring for animals and assisting her father with a small orchard of fruit trees and gardens. Michalina was multi-lingual and taught Genevieve Polish and Russian languages and the customs and recipes of her heritage. This exposure was the foundation to her deep understanding of human nature and her caring and patience for the customs and beliefs. Genevieve graduated from Mount Carmel High School class of 1937. She married Stanley Dobija in Mount Carmel Church in 1939. She became a home maker caring for Stanley and their three children; Carole, Michael and Patricia. Genevieve entered the work force once the children were of age and retired from Wyandotte General Hospital as assistant Data Processing Manager. Even with a full schedule, she always had time to support her husband and children and assist her mother when she became disabled. She also loved written correspondence with relatives who had ventured out of state. In 1976 Genevieve and Stanley moved to Lake Odessa, MI. They Built their dream home on Eagle Point. Genevieve was a very devout Catholic. Her faith was her foundation for hope and her charity. Genevieve enjoyed boating on the lake, golf with Stanley who on occasion she would beat by a few strokes and making a fun refuge for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When her health failed her, she entered Thornapple Manor and continued her astounding ability to make and care for her friends. Genevieve is survived by her children Carole (Frank) Netzel, Michael (Carol) Dobija and Patricia (Steve) Frederiksen; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law. Genevieve was the last of her era. Visitation will be held October 11, 2019 from 6pm until 8pm at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with a Rosary being held at 7pm. Funeral Mass will begin at 11am on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church. Burial will take place immediately following at Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa.
